Let's enjoy Colombo!

Colombo is the commercial capital and largest city in the country by population. The legislative capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte and  it is within the suburb of Colombo. Colombo is a busy and a vibrant city with a mixture of modern life and colonial buildings and ruins. Top sights in Colombo are Galle Face Green; a scenic waterfront area with food stalls, Gangaramaya Temple; a traditional temple & education center, Viharamahadevi Park; a laid - back park  for outdoor activities, Arcade Independence square; Historical Landmark Of Colombo, Colombo National Museum, Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, Beira lake, Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil, Old Parliament Building to take A plunge into The history, Pettah Floating Market  to shop on a Floating Platform, Laksala for best souvenir shop, The finest dutch architectures of Wolvendaal Church, National Art Gallery; a perfect place for Art lovers, Beddagana wetland park, Diyatha Uyana and Colombo Port Maritime Museum for  a short history walk.  Newly built Colombo Lotus tower adds to the beauty of the city. 

There are several ways to get around the city of Colombo. You can travel in Colombo by private or public buses, by rental car and driver or by three wheeler (tuk tuk), by train or by walking. Colombo is a busy and a city with traffic jams as it is the main trading city of Sri Lanka. As a result, you may have to spend more time traveling by bus or car. However bus fares are extremely low. Getting around Colombo by train is a time saver. Latest railway timetables are available at railway.gov.lk.  If the sun and hot climate do not bother you, you can enjoy the wonders of Colombo by walking. Another option for short distance travel is to rent a three wheeler/tuk tuk. It is better to hire a meter taxi(tuk tuk) as three wheeler drivers are likely to charge you more. 

There are plenty of restaurants and hotels in Colombo where you can get the delicious food you like. There are cheap restaurants as well as luxury restaurants in Colombo to suit your budget. Among the Colombo cheap eats , The Curry Pot for a delicious Sri Lankan meal, The Grind Coffee house and The Blue Swan Cafe for the coziest  Cafes, and Health House for Healthy Sri Lankan Food, for indian food lovers  Amirthaa and many others are available.  

As a travel destination Colombo offers excellent hotels for every taste and budget. Casa Colombo, The Ocean Front,  Tintagel Colombo,  Lake Lodge,  Colombo Courtyard,  Galle Face Hotel Colombo, The Havelock Bungalow and The Wallawwa are among the luxurious hotels to book in Colombo. Some of the cheap and comfortable places to stay in the Colombo area are  De Colombo Boutique Hotel, Elyon Colombo, Me Colombo, Fairway Colombo, City Lake Residence by Sunrise, Backpackers’ Paradise Colombo and Colombo City Hotel.    

If you wish to stay in Colombo for a few days the best area to stay in is the Kollupitiya area. The neighborhood is full of restaurants, hotels, shops and street vendors. You can buy vegetables, meat, fish, fruits, clothes and electrical devices from Kollupitiya market. If you stay in Kollupitiya, most of Colombo's attractions are within walking distance or easily accessible by public transport. 

It is worth a visit to Colombo and stay 1-2 days. For safety it is better not to walk in the street late at night or alone. Keep in mind not to expose your valuables in public and don’t give too much information to strangers.
