Kothmale Mahaweli Maha Seya

Kothmale is a village that is located in Central province, Nuwara-eliya district and about 50km away from Kandy city, Sri Lanka. Kothmale is a mountain region that the Sinhalese kings left forested to generate sufficient rainfall for rice cultivation in valleys below.There are so many beautiful places you can see if you visit the Kothmale area. Mahaweli Maha Seya, Kadiyallena Falls, Devon Falls, Kotmale Dam reservoir are among them. This is about Kothmale Mahaweli Maha seya.  

This is a buddhist temple situated in Kothmale. The founder is former prime minister and  Mahaweli Development minister  of Sri Lanka, Gamini Dissanayaka. The Stupa was started to be built in 1983 by then President of Sri lanka, J.R. Jayawardena and the construction work was completed & the stupa was opened on 20 June, 2016 by president Maithreepala Sirisena and prime minister Ranil Wickramasibghe.  This stupa is the second largest stupa in Sri Lanka, after the Ruwanweli Maha Seya, Anuradhapura. This Stupa can be accessed by nearly 4000 devotees at once. There is a small stupa constructed inside of the main stupa.  The main designer of Mahaweli Maha Seya is Vidya Jothi, Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe.
