Today we like to share our thoughts on the health benefits and the lessons that we can learn by maintaining a small wonderful garden at your home-sweet-home. 

Improve the bond between the family members

Due to lots of circumstances occurring in your habitual life styles, we may not have enough time to get acquainted with our family members even if we live among them in the same household. We can save a date and a time to do family gardening together even for once or twice a week. Our lives are hectic and that is no secret. But we still have a choice. We can choose to spend more time with our family. And that is where home gardening can help us. It can even help us develop positive relationships. These relationships can be within the family, in the workplace and even leading up to marriage and after marriage according to most of the research findings. As some of us live our lives we start to understand the importance of the small things in life and then we experience the happiness that simplicity brings. The perfect environment to understand this is the home garden. So by having a family time together in your home garden can improve your family bonds between parents-children, husband-wife and between siblings. 

Improving the enthusiastic feelings on nature to become positive

According to most of the environmentalists around the world we can improve man’s thinking by engaging more time in nature. Parents can invite the kids to walk in the garden. Or if you can create a seating area you all can enjoy a cup of tea together. Everyone can watch birds bathing together. Parents can show the kids butterflies and the kids might even volunteer to water the garden. 

Sometimes parents can ask children to come and just have a walk in the garden with their parents. It’s something that parents should teach their kids from childhood. Environmentalists always talk about ‘parenting through mother nature’. Nature is a great subject for parenting. It’s something that parents should pass on to their kids who in turn will pass that on to their kids. So generally and naturally it becomes a heretic identity in one’s own generation. It is an excellent opportunity to maintain conversations. Another beautiful aspect of home gardening is talking to plants, which even your kids can do. You admire how beautiful they are and experience the fragrance of flowers together. 

Sharpening the thinking ability 

Children will learn to respect those plants as they identify the plant as a living being. Once kids experience this right from childhood they will learn how to respect each other, listen to each other and of course care for each other. This will help when it comes to family bonding and bonding with partners in the future. Spending time in the garden or with nature will keep them away from electronic devices. Once they practice this, spending time in the garden or with nature will become a habit. This way they will not waste time. People and especially children can spend their spare or leisure time usefully to nature. 

Improve your psychological moral 

Home gardening can make you aware of nature in ways some people can never imagine. It can help you predict rainfall and you will know that there is a predator somewhere in the garden. The Home garden is the immediate external environment we experience. It is a place with many activities. Physical activities are sharpening your psychology. 

If there is a snake outside, we can justify that by hearing the sounds of animals or listening to squirrels and birds who give alarm calls even though we cannot see the snake. We can imagine that it is going to be raining by listening to the frog calls or Coucal calls or even just observing a line of ants with eggs. That is the wonder of nature if we are attached to it. The healing power of this is very important to make your soul so calm. 

Develop your skills

Another added reason to have a home garden is that it is both fun and helps develop useful skills. Let your children to count ants in clusters and that helps in mathematics. Another skill they may learn is photography. Fun activities can be counting fireflies in the garden at night as a family or looking at the night sky trying to understand the stars or even making patterns using fallen leaves with the whole family. Science, physics, chemistry, mathematics all the subjects in the school can be covered by your home garden by empowering your children skills. Not only can the children, even the adult’s skills be easily improved by staying more time in your home garden. Make your home garden a fun place. 

Ex-situ Conservation

While parents are involved in home gardening, you can ask your children to do the same or what they are presumed to do in their own area for working such as planting small flowering plants and playing with coconut shells. When the kids are having their own space to plant whatever they like they may get involved in the bigger planting plans when they had grown up. Every birthday they may plant a new plant. Then they got involved in plucking the harvest of vegetables and fruits. They may be watching butterflies, birds and bees in the garden. They can touch earthworms and snails without any hesitation. They also can take photographs. And that is a skill they learnt through the garden. The teachers even can use this same method for the students to enhance their field knowledge. So the children's works will benefit automatically by the nature through the conversations to make a better place on earth for living to every creature on it. 

Growing the inner peace - maithree

You will always feel very happy when you see the first flower of a plant which you planted a few months ago or even when you see new leaves on the plant or the first fruit. Also you can be so happy when you see a big earthworm or a beneficial insect like dragonfly in your garden as it is the sign of healthy soil. If you have butterfly hosts or feeding plants in your garden, you can easily watch how a butterfly is emerging and how they are completing their beautiful life cycle. You can enhance your pollinators by keeping a clay pot on a tree to make the bees can make their hive on it. You can easily improve the pollinators as well as you can taste the clean and quality bee honey as a substitute for sugar. Also, you can watch the birds bathe in your home garden which is a very relaxing experience. Everyday every morning you may gain happiness walking around your home garden as there is always something in the garden which makes your day. These all things will improve your peace attributes inside your mind- so the world will rely on that peacemaking which we call as maithree to all beings. 

Own flowers to offer for your religious cultural events & back yard for your kitchen

You can be proud of taking your own flowers to your religious things from your home garden. It also improves your state of donation the excess amount you have to other participants and say that you had grown on your own soil. 

You can grow your vegetables in your backyard and you can send them to your healthy kitchen because they are so organic. When you are cultivating or maintaining a backyard garden please double check not to use any synthetically produced chemicals for preventing your vegetables by deposition of heavy metals or any biohazards on them. 

Your workout- gym & meditation

The garden is a place where you have to work physically. While you are tilling, planting or watering you are sweating. So, it’s like your gym. However, we point out that when you are fully involved with activities like weeding, it is meditative. There are no negative emotions involved such as anger, envy, jealousy, sadness or depression when you are working with your garden. When you are involved with some activities where your mind and body is well focused, this is very relaxing and healthy. This is the best method to get relaxed if you are in anxiety. We are in a life which is indeed a race. It can be a dangerous race if you are not conscious about what you are doing. Therefore, whatever you do you have to be mindful. Also, you have to do what you like to do. The best advice is to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the key to discovering what you should do in your life and how you should do it. If you select Gardening as one of your main activities, you can experience many positive vibes.

Connecting with nature is the best medicine a human can have for healthy living. Gardening is an exercise where one can connect with nature very easily. If you grow plants without chemicals you are not adding any poison to the soil. You look after the plants carefully and you get a harvest which is not poisonous. Once you get your harvest you feel happy as it is poison free. And when you sell your harvest or share the harvest with neighbors or friends they will praise you because it is not contaminated. Hearing those words will give you happiness. This way you are fully aware that because of you, nobody is affected negatively. This will fill your mind with joy. When involved with gardening your mind experiences positive vibes and there is no negativity. Your inner self is free from impurity. This is spirituality.
