The great Sariputta - Foremost Disciple of Gautama Samma Sambuddha

The great Sariputta maha rahathan was one of the two chief disciples of the Enlightened one, the Gautama Samma Sambuddha. The other chief disciple is Arhat Moggallana (Mugalan). You can see on either side of a statue of the supreme Lord Buddha in many temples in Sri Lanka, the statues of the two monks. Arhat Maha Moggallana is shown in blue color on the left of the Lord Buddha and Maha Sariputta is on the right. The great Sariputta maha rahathan was second only to the Lord Buddha in the depth of and range of his understanding, and his ability to teach the Doctrine of Deliverance.
Maha Sariputta Theru had so many noble qualities, cultivated over an incalculable period of time in samsara. Those qualities made him shine like a full moon among the other Arahats.
The great Sariputta maha rahatan was a skilled preceptor and exemplar, kind and considerate friend, a guardian of the welfare of Bhikkhus under his charge, faithful repository of his Master's doctrine,a man unique in his patience and steadfastness, modest and upright in thought, word and deed.
Once the great sariputta thero was traduced by a monk unjustly. That monk accused the great Sariputta had beaten him which nearly caused damage to his ear. When The Supreme Lord Buddha questioned about it, the great Sariputta used seven similes to compare his virtues, instead of denying the charge. At each of which the earth roared and trembled. By this the monk felt remorse and admitted the slender and then the Lord Buddha asked Sariputta to forgive the monk, otherwise the monk’s head would split into seven pieces. The great Sariputta thero not only forgave him, but also asked for pardon for himself if he had in any way offended the monk.
Some people had doubts about the reputation of the Arahat Sariputta’s patience. Once when Sariputta thero on the way for alms, a brahmin who didn't believe in the qualities of the Sariputta Thero, to check his patience, blew on his back. The great Sariputta did not even care to look back, quite unconcernedly proceeded on. The Brahmin was filled with remorse so that he fell at Sariputta thero’s feet and begged for his pardon. He not only pardoned him, but also accepted his invitation to have the alms that day at the Brahmin’s house.
He was also a grateful person, he expressed his gratitude to whomsoever had helped him in whatever way. He obeisance to his first Dhamma teacher, the Elder Assaji Thero, daily immediately after the Lord buddha. On occasions the Elder Assaji thero was not present, he faced the direction that Assaji thero was and prostrated on the ground to obeisance him.
Being modest is another outstanding quality of the great Sariputta. Once a seven years old novice monk pointed out that a corner of the Sariputta thero’s under robe trailing on the ground. Venerable Sariputta stepped aside at once and arranged the robe in the proper way, and then said “now it is corrected”.
The Arahat Sariputta earned the title of “Dhamma Senapathi” the meaning is “The Marshal of Dhamma” because he was capable of explaining the Dhamma, in lucid manner taking into consideration the individual temperaments of the listeners in many different ways.
Sariputta Maha rahatan paid his last debt to his mother the nursing fee for bringing him up by preaching dhamma which enabled her to attain to the first stage of sainthood that leads to Nibbana in seven more births, before passing away for the final time in Samsara, never to be reborn in any sphere of existence .
