The Shanti Mantra

The meaning of Shanthi is peace. The Shanti Mantras or "Peace Mantras" or Pancha Shanti are Hindu prayers for Peace found in Upanishads. Shanti mantra is chanted to calm the mind of the reciter and the nature around her/him. There are many Shanti mantras, here is one of the popular Shanti mantras, 

Shanti mantra :  

“Om…. Om….Om…”

“Sarvesham Svastir Bhavatu - Sarvesham Shantir Bhavatu 

Sarvesham Poornam bhavatu - Sarvesham Mangalam Bhavatu 

Sarve Bhavantu sukhinah - sarve Santu Niraamayaah 

Sarve Bhadraani Pashyantu -Ma Kash Chid Dukha Bhag Bhavet”

The meaning of Shanti mantra : 

“May auspiciousness be unto all - May peace be unto all 

May fullness be unto all - May prosperity be unto all 

May all be happy - may all be free from disabilities 

May all look of the good of the other 

May none suffer from sorrow”  

“Shanti Shanti Shanti….” 

It is better to chant Shanti mantras early in the morning, so that you can stay calm throughout the day. Shanti mantras are very powerful and are said to be miraculous.

Shanti mantras are not exclusively to bring peace to your home and heart, yet additionally to break the obstacles and allow issues to calm down. Shanti mantras ends with reciting Shanti three times. Chanting  shanti three times to represent peace in body, speech, and mind.

Benefits of chanting Shanti Mantra can be listed as follows,

  • Shanti mantra can help relieve the tension and stress set up in the minds

  • This mantra can have a soothing effect on the mind and lead to deep relaxation

  • Creates a calming and peaceful atmosphere around the chanter

  • As the Shanti mantra wishes peace and goodness for all the lying beings, the chanter gets all the benefits as meditation “Metta” - Loving kindness.  Those are, 

  • Relieve insomnia; One sleeps easily, wakes easily, dreams no evil dreams.

  • Be free from harm that can happen from  fire, poison or weapons.  

  • Devas protect the one who meditates on “Metta” . Even non human beings like Asura will be nice to the person who meditates on loving - kindness. 

  • One's mind gains concentration quickly.

  • One's complexion is bright. 

  • One dies unconfused and will be born in Brahma worlds. 

Evidence based studies suggests practising loving kindness  promotes self-compassion, decreases stress and anxiety, reduces physical pain, improves longevity, enhances social connections. Therefore when you chant the Shanti mantra everyday you can get these benefits as well.
